How should you use the Weekly Visual Planner?

This simple but effective visual planner can be used to give a child routine and structure over a week and improve communication between a caregiver and the child, leading to less frustration, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

They can rest against any side / shelf / surface or be fixed to the wall using the 3M strips provided.

  1. The planner is your child’s board and not yours, encourage them to take ownership.
  2. With your child, choose 1 or 2 photos of what is happening each day – this can be an event, a place or a person.
  3. Encourage your child to insert these photos into the pockets on the correct day and talk about each activity.
  4. At bedtime, talk about what is happening tomorrow and give your child an opportunity to ask questions or write on the board. Allow them to draw a tick, a cross, a smiley face etc. Encourage them to express an opinion, positive or negative, and then respond accordingly.
  5. Each morning, encourage your child to look at what’s happneing today and give them the opportunity to talk about anything that’s worrying them.
  6. At bedtime, before you talk about tomorrow, review today and try to pull out the positives.
  7. Your aim is to send you child to bed focussing on the good things they did today and the good things that will happen tomorrow.
  8. If they ask what’s happening tomorrow encourage them to look at their board and start a conversation about how good tomorrow will be.

(Note: You can use your own drawings, photos, visual symbols or words with the pockets, whatever works for your child)

Remember to be patient and consistent with your message and keep talking about what is on the board – ALWAYS – so the child learns to trust it as a tool.
