Our first & then (or now & next) boards are simple visual aid tools that have been designed to help parents, teachers and therapists communicate a simple sequence of events to a child by showing them what they need to do now (first) and what they will do next (then).

When used correctly, these boards can help children with autism, and other language or additional needs move smoothly from one activity to another.

What is included in your First & Then Pack?

  • 1 First & Then board (choose either pink/green or blue/green) – size 19cm x 12cm
  • 2 x Corresponding self-clinging ‘gecko’ pockets that hold the symbols / photos – size 6cm x 6cm
  • 50 printed TBM symbol cards – size 5cm x 5cm
  • Mesh carry case to keep your boards and symbols protected when not in use.

How should you use our First & Then Boards?

This simple but effective 2 step visual strategy can be used to improve communication between a caregiver and the child, leading to less frustration when transitioning between tasks, or being asked to do something they don’t want to do.

  1. Choose a symbol / photo of what you would like your child to do (e.g. ‘get dressed’)
  2. Insert it into the pocket on the FIRST side of the board.
  3. Choose a symbol / photo of something your child will get to have / do after they complete the task you want them to do (something the like / prefer, e.g. ‘bubbles’)
  4. Insert this into the pocket on the THEN side of the board.
  5. Show the child the board with both symbols / photos visible and point to each in turn speaking slowly and clearly while they watch:

‘FIRST – GET DRESSED, THEN – BUBBLES’

(Note: You can use your own drawings, photos, visual symbols as well as the TBM symbols that are supplied)

Remember to be patient and consistent with your message and follow through on exactly what is on the board – ALWAYS – so the child learns to trust it as a tool.

TBM First & Then Boards come ready to use and have been designed in partnership with Ourboards. They are lightweight, rigid, drywipe boards that have ‘gecko’ self-cling pockets, enabling you to easily insert a visual symbol / photo inside.

TBM Symbols have been exclusively designed in partnership with Stand out Stories. Each pack contains 50 easy clean cards with clear symbols depicting daily routines, food, activities, places, popular objects and other motivators. They are designed primarily for use with our First & Then Boards but can also be used with other visual tools.
